Installing Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS | Информационные технологии от Вальдемарыча

This article is written for those who were searching for a detailed and simple for the understanding guide on how to install Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS.

You will need to consider the following before starting the installation:

  • Ensure you have at least 2GB of free storage space.
  • Have access to either a DVD or a USB flash drive containing the version of Ubuntu Server you want to install.

Download the appropriate ISO file from the Ubuntu web site.

To trigger the installation process, perform the following:

  • Put the Ubuntu DVD into your DVD drive or insert the USB stick or other install media.
  • Restart your computer.

Most computers will automatically boot from USB or DVD, though in some cases this is disabled to improve boot times. If you don’t see the boot message and the «Welcome» screen which should appear after it, you will need to set your computer to boot from the install media.

There should be an on-screen message when the computer starts telling you what key to press for settings or a boot menu. Depending on the manufacturer, this could be Escape, F2, F10 or F12. Restart your computer and hold down this key until the boot menu appears, then select the drive with the Ubuntu install media.

After a few moments, you should see the installer that will display a menu asking you to select the preferred language.

Select the language you wish to use and press «Enter».

The installer will display a menu asking you to select your keyboard layout.

Select the keyboard layout you wish to use and then select «Done» and press «Enter» to continue.

Now you are ready to select what you want to install. This tutorial assumes you select the first option. If you are installing MAAS, you should check out the MAAS documentation for more information.

Select «Install Ubuntu» and press «Enter».

The installer will automatically try to configure network connections via DHCP. Alternatively, you can choose to manually configure the IP address.

Select «Done» and press «Enter» to continue after the network connection will be configured.

If the Ubuntu archive can only be accessed via a proxy in your environment, it can be entered on the next screen.

Leave the field blank if it is not required and select «Done» and press «Enter» to continue.

Next, you will be asked to enter the address of the network mirror.

Select «Done» and press «Enter» to continue unless you want to change it to some other address you prefer.

Now you need to configure storage. The recommended install is to have an entire disk or partition set aside for running Ubuntu. Note that Ubuntu no longer requires a separate partition for swap space, nor will the automated install create one.

Select «Use An Entire Disk» and press «Enter».

Next menu will allow you to select a disk from the ones detected on the system.

Select the disk you wish to use and press «Enter».

The installer will calculate what partitions to create and present this information.

Select «Done» and press «Enter» to continue if you are happy with the disk layout displayed.

Double check that everything looks good here and you aren’t about to reformat the wrong device. Note that there is no «Undo» for this step, once you confirm the changes, the indicated devices will be overwritten and any contents may be lost.

Select «Continue» and press «Enter» if you are sure that you aren’t about to reformat the wrong device.

The software is now being installed on the disk. On the next step, you will need to provide some more information. Ubuntu Server needs to have at least one known user for the system and a hostname. The user also needs a password.

Select «Done» and press «Enter» to continue when all field will be filled in.

On the next screen, you can choose to install the OpenSSH server package to enable secure remote connection to your server.

Also, you can import SSH keys from Launchpad or Github but a password is still required to be set, as this user will have root access through the sudo utility.

Select «Done» and press «Enter» to continue when needed options for your server will be selected.

On the next step, you can select Featured Server Snaps, meaning you could choose to use a pre-configured Server.

Select «Done» and press «Enter» to continue when needed options for your server will be selected.

On the next screen, you will see the progress of the installer.

When the install is complete, you can select «Reboot Now» and press «Enter» to continue.

Remove the install media and press «Enter».
